Fern’s Story

Ruth Fern (Henager) Black, the daughter of Roy and Ruth Henager, was born on July 1, 1943 in Finley, Oklahoma and departed this life on February 25, 2018, in Perry, Oklahoma at the age of 74.

Fern graduated from Quay High School in Payne County where she had many stories about playing basketball and softball. After graduation, Fern married Harvey Black in Maramec, Oklahoma at the Evangelical United Brethren Church on June 1, 1961.

Fern worked at several places over the years including Tansey’s Grocery in Pawnee, and Presbyterian Apartments in Northport, Alabama. Fern’s hobbies included working in her flower gardens and collecting dolls. She was also an avid sports fan. Fern loved watching the Oklahoma Sooners play football, basketball, and softball. She also enjoyed watching the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents, sister Sue Fender, and brothers Duane and Morris Henager. She is survived by her husband Harvey of the home, and children Robert (& Heather) Black of Perry, OK., Terri (& Brad) Fite of Eldridge, AL., and Kelly (& Kristie) Black of Jane, Mo. Surviving grandchildren are Evan (& Jacque) Black of Stillwater, Ok., Trent (& Jesica) Black of Perkins, Ok., Hunter Black of Perry, Ok., Amanda (& Gregg) Fields of Fayette, AL., Kayla (& Royce) Holmes of Cottondale, AL., Trey Black, Taryn Black and Teagan Black all of Jane, Mo. and 4 great grandchildren, Leighton Fields, Will Black, Reagan Fields, Kaylee Black. Fern is also survived by siblings Clyde (& Betty) Henager of Cleveland, Ok. and Rosann (& Wayne) Smith of Cushing, OK.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, March 1, 2018 at 2:00pm at the Maramec I.O.O.F. Cemetery with Senior Adult Minister Chan Ray officiating. Following the services there will be a reception at the Maramec Community Center (Fire Station). Services are being handled through Poteet Funeral Home in Pawnee, Oklahoma.

The family requests that all flowers be plantable so they can be planted in her favorite flower garden at the family farm to be enjoyed for years to come. In lieu of flowers, seeds or bulbs would be appreciated.
