Ronald Wayne Mullin 79 entered into eternal peace on August 17th at the Southern Oaks Care Center in Pawnee, Oklahoma. He was surrounded by friends and cared for by the employees of Southern Oaks, many of whom he taught at Pawnee High School. Physician’s Choice Hospice played a vital role in the last years of his life. They were present daily, offering support and encouragement. Ron was born on September 10th 1939 in Marlow, Oklahoma to Veda and Joe T. Mullin. He grew up working on the family farm with his parents, brother and sister. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, and his sister Sue. He is survived by his brother Joe of Ninnekah, Oklahoma and several nephews and cousins. Ron graduated from Central High School in Marlow, Oklahoma in 1957 where he received many honors and was the Salutatorian of his graduating class. He loved his graduating class and has remained in contact with them since graduating. After graduating from high school he attended the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, where he earned a Bachelors degree in Business and received a prestigious scholarship for outstanding academic achievement. He also received a Master’s Degree in Business and English. Ron taught Business, Geography, Accounting, Business Math, English, Yearbook, Office Machines and a Pawnee Language class during his 35 years at Pawnee Schools. He was chosen “Teacher of the Year” by his peers in the year 2000. He was highly regarded by his many students and fellow teachers. He had a tremendous impact on the lives of many young people in our community. He was the faithful statistician for the Black Bear teams for many years and rarely missed a sporting event. He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Pawnee. Ron was a dedicated member of the American Iris Society for many years and served as president for this national organization. He received many awards from the Iris Society. Among his favorites were the gold medal for service and the Dykes medal for his famous irises “Barbara Jean and Rhonda Fleming”. He developed the “Rhonda Fleming” iris in tribute to the Hollywood actress and remained in contact and corresponded with her until his recent illness. He traveled throughout the United States giving lectures, judging and speaking at national and local iris organizations. He was the author of two books, one for Committee Chairman and one for Regional Vice Presidents. In 1997 he brought the National Iris Convention to Pawnee and was able to display some of his greatest work in the gardens at the Maltsberger home. He always said the greatest contribution in his life was his teaching of the young men and women of Pawnee. He took great pride in their success, no matter how great or how small. Job well done Mr. Mullin, you can rest now.
