Fern Ruth Waters-Myers

Fern was born February 16th, 1928 in Ralston Oklahoma to Emery and Violet Hight. She was raised in the Ralston/Fairfax area with her three brothers; Jim, Bill, and Roy, and her two sisters, Vivian and Wanda. Jim and Bill were especially ornery to her, assuring she would not grow up to be spoiled. Jim would occasionally put chewing gum in her long, brown hair as a source of constant aggravation, and Bill assured she would have a lifelong fear of snakes by perching countless hours in a tree with the largest black snake he could find so he could drop it on her as she walked unwittingly underneath.
On April 18th, 1946, Fern entered into marriage with Rex Waters of Pawnee OK, the love of her life until Rex was called home on December 4th, 2008. She gained another two brothers from that union, Jack and Roy Jr., where her sibling training came in handy, especially with Jack, as she was already an expert at removing chewing gum from her hair.
When Rex and Fern were married they lived with Rex’s father and mother, Roy Sr. and Bessie for the first year, until they acquired their own house. She contributed to the family farming and ranching operation her entire life. She did form distaste for hoeing cotton, a chore she was accustomed to before marriage. She was the “barber” for all the male members of the family. She, along with her sisters-in-law and mother-in-law provided four course hot meals for the men in the hayfields.
For many years Fern was a member of Pleasant View Women’s Club. This club was an association of rural ladies that held monthly meetings in a abandoned one room school house east of Pawnee. In later years she was invited to become a member of the PEO club, and enjoyed the companionship those members as well.
Fern was a very well known and talented seamstress, fashioning custom clothing for both family and friends. She also taught many how to knit, crochet, and tat. In later years took up and enjoyed painting and crafts of all kinds until health issues interfered.
In 1971 Fern sought and acquired employment off the farm with Mr. Ned Williams as a secretary to the superintendent of Pawnee Schools. She made many friends over the years she worked there with both the teaching staff and students. Her bright smile and compassionate care affected many students that are remembered to this day.
In 2011 Fern remarried to Basil Myers. Basil and Fern were classmates during their high school years in Ralston, and Basil had lost his wife several years prior. They had dated back in those high school days, and they both found love and companionship with each other until Basil’s death in March of 2017.
Fern is survived by her son Mark Waters and his wife Carolyn, her grandson Brad Waters and great grandson Cadby, her brother and sister-in-law Roy Waters Jr. (Wimpy) and his wife Martha, nephew and niece Jack Waters Jr. and wife Debbie, step daughter Gayla Patterson and her husband Roger, and other nieces, nephews and many friends.
