Barry Horsechief was born October 13, 1947 to Daniel Horsechief and Virginia Riding In Horsechief in Pawnee, OK.
Barry was a full blood Pawnee. His maternal grandparents were Frank and Ethel (Wilson) Riding In, great grandparents were William Riding in and Virginia Riding In. His great grandmother, Lottice (Walking Bear) Fancy Eagle, walked down from Nebraska during removal. His paternal grandparents were Mabel Long and Hugh Horsechief, great grandparents were. He was proud of his heritage on both his Horsechief and Riding In families.
Barry began his school at Pawnee Elementary Barry graduated from McClain High School Barry served in the US Army in Viet Nam and was honorably discharged. Barry was an accomplished artist. He studied art at Emporia State College in Emporia, Kansas and the American Indian Art Institute in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Barry was a Silk Screen Operator for many Poster shops in the Tulsa area. Barry was very interested in all forms of Art, History, Science and Poetry. He was a very prolific reader of the workings of mankind’s thoughts and reasons of their actions that they wrote about. Barry would read all night and sleep all day, of these things that conflicted with his religious beliefs in Christianity.
Barry loved art, music, cats, and was an avid reader. He loved living at Council Valley and did throughout his life starting as a young child staying with his grandparents and returning to live with his grandmother allowing her to stay in her home. He shared the residence with his brother for a number of years.
Barry was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, his sister Donna Marie Roop, niece Cheryl Smith, and Aunt Marlene Mameah.
Barry is survived by his brother, Gary Lee Horsechief, of Council Valley, and sister Dani Sue (Dayna) Ashlock and husband Terry, nephews Terry D. Ashlock, Jesse Ashlock, Stevie Ashlock, and niece Lisa Ashlock; Aunt Janice Horsechief.
Graveside services are Thursday 10:00 A.M. in the Highland Cemetery with Rev. Warren Pratt Jr. officiating. Services were entrusted to the Poteet Funeral Home and Cremation Services, friends can leave a memory for the family at www.poteetfuneralhome.com
